The 2019 AARDA AGM and Trade Show took place at the Fantasyland Hotel in Edmonton Sep 19 to 21. A great success with the largest turnout in memory. Over 160 people registered.

Things kicked off on Thursday evening as North American Powertrain Components took a group of people through their facility to showcase theri operation. Todd Crane and his staff provided exceptional hospitality treating the visitors like royalty. They served up beverages and lead a very informative tour through their production facility. This was followed up by treating everyone to dinner at Bubba Gump’s restaurant back at the hotel.

Friday, the Automotive Recyclers of Canada (ARC) held their annual meeting at the Fantasyland Hotel. Friday evening, AARDA held a welcome reception sponsored by Impact Auto Auctions. Outside the hotel, ELV Select demonstrated their fluid draining station. This was an interesting demo that was repeated Saturday evening several times so everyone had the opportunity to see their equipment in action. The vehicles used in the demonstrations were proved by Eagle Tec Recycling while the loader was coutesy of Finning of Canada.

Saturday morning AARDA held their AGM. Members heard from Steve Fletcher, executive director of ARC, with an update on ARC activities. Sandy Blalock from ARA provided an update on ARA and Canadian partners. Jeremy Brown from Group Health spoke on what their company has available for members and Malcolm Knox, CEO of AMVIC, (Alberta Motor Vehicle Industry Council) let members know about the new requirements to obtain an auto recyclers licence in Alberta. Presentations were followed by elections. Long time board member Kelly Popow from Popow’s Auto Recycling stepped down this year. Michael Allen from Allen and Sons was elected to fill the open  board position.

Following the AGM, coaches headed to Aldon Auto Salvage for a tour of their facility. Fantastic hospitality provided by Aldon’s included a catered delicious lunch, wagons  running tours of their yard, and a trip through Al’s Toy Barn, a museum consisting of three Quonset huts, packed with vintage cars and other antiques collected over Al’s many years.

Upon returning to the fantasyland Hotel, the main event of the weekend was ready to commence. A trade show featuring 21 vendors opened at 4pm. Members and visitors were able to tour through the show, take in the ELV select demonstrations going on outside, and enjoy a meal served up buffet style while the trade show was in progress.

The final activity was the silent and live auction held to support the Jack Cohen Continuing Education award. This was the first year that funds were handed out and the two recipients, Justin Morlock through A1 Willy’s of Red Deer and Tianna Eleniak through Aldon Auto Salvage of Lamont each received $2250 to help them with their continuing education costs.

This year, the auctions raised $6354 for the Jack Cohen fund.

Overall, this was the most successful AGM AARDA has had and thanks go out to all the sponsors who made the weekend possible. If you missed this event, you really missed out on a lot!
